The Phantom. The Green Lama. The Destroyer.

Three heroes from three eras, yet all have hand in the thought process in the creation of Fear of the Reaper and the new Gunmaster as part of Pulpsloitation.

How you ask? All will be revealed in time:

Lee Falk’s the Phantom was arguably the very first masked/tights wearing hero in comic strips, debuting in 1936 . The saga of a generational hero who swears a sacred oath that he and his descendants will wipe out the scourge of piracy of the face of the earth is still ongoing with the mythology of his world continuing to expand. He has appeared in Strips, comic books, movie serials, a feature film and two television pilots!

The Green Lama was created by Kendall Foster Crossen (writing as Richard Foster) in 1940 as Munsey Publication’s answer to Street and Smith’s phenomenally successful Shadow pulp magazine. Jethro Dumont (who masquerades as a Buddhist priest Dr. Pauli) becomes a Tibetan Buddhist monk who then returned to America to fight crime, using sills and attitudes he had learned in the Far East. He often wore his green monk’s robes and used ‘radioactive salts’ that gave him the ability to zap the bad guys like a living taser!

The Green Lama appeared on radio and a slightly different version was a popular comic book drawn by the amazing Mac Rayboy. The pulp ceased in 1943 after fourteen excellent stories and the comic book ended in 1946, but the character has reappeared in new stories in both prose and in comics of late.

The final of the trio that influenced my work on The Gunmaster is The Destroyer (aka: Remo Williams). He was created by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir in 1971 to both make fun of and cash in on the men’s adventure paperback book craze of the era.

The story of the worlds most perfect assassin tutored by an ancient master of the art of Sinanju is still going strong with the original writers bringing in ghost writers (most notably the prolific Will Murray) to continue the saga. There have been comic books, a feature film and a T. V. pilot.

How, you ask do these divergent influences feed into my version of The Gunmaster? In a moment, but first a look at the original…

The original Gunmaster appeared in 10 issues of Clue and Real Clue Crime Stories in panel format and one text story. In that story the generation aspect (as per the Phantom) is already established in that the current Gunmaster Dumas Poe is a direct descendant of the monk who founded the order. The religious nature of the hero- also a Caucasian from Tibet like Dr. Pauli and also devoted to his cause with religious fervor also echoes the Green Lama, though he is dressed in an impeccable suit and tie and is more a detective hero or Saint clone. And, as it is a comic, there is no sex.

In ‘bringing up’ The Gunmaster to fit the mold of a 1980s men’s adventure style story as was Nick Ahlhelm’s idea for the Pulpsploitation line I felt I had to explore both the religious aspect of the story more deeply as well as ‘spice it up’ with some sex.

For the latter enter the stunning Majesty Blayde (her name alone a not to the amazing Modesty Blaise). Her relationship with the current (1980s) Gunmaster — Darian Poe, son of the 1940s version is intended to up the pheromone level of the story with a promise of more.

As for the religious aspect (and the mystical) I chose to explore an older Tibetan religion than Buddhism — Bon Po. Darian’s contact with the council by telepathy and some other aspects of the tale takes us into territory not yet explored.

I have more adventures in my mind and yet another generation of Gunmaster in the wings, so if you like what you see in Fear the Reaper, I hope you let us know…
Mike McCurley on Dino ForceDino Force has 24 hours left on Kickstarter. Here's some words from T. Mike McCurley on his contribution to the shared world.

Godzilla stomping his way through Japan, viewed on a tiny black-and-white television. Raymond Burr as reporter Steve Martin, cast in deep shadow one moment and stark closeup the next, telling the world of this titanic monster from the sea. Me, as a kid, sitting on the edge of my chair and watching the display with mouth hanging open. Dreaming for weeks of enormous beasts wading through cities.

That was my introduction to kaiju in general, but it wasn’t my last exposure. For decades, I got my fix with late-night movies, VHS tapes with bad tracking, and the occasional new gem found in some movie rental place.

Shortly after those early kaiju films set a spark in my brain, the discovery of TV shows such as Ultraman, and Voltron: Defender of the Universe fanned the flames. I grew up loving these things. When I started writing, I always had little fragments and snippets of verse that alluded to them.

Years passed, and while I still loved the subject matter, I did nothing significant with it, turning my attention instead to superheroes and serial survival stories. My only exposure was a stack of movies and quite a few television shows. Then one day, I get a message from Nick Ahlhelm telling me of a project he has in the works and gauging my interest. I fairly jumped at the chance. Shortly thereafter I was scribbling notes in a book and imagining where I wanted to take the tale.

When the locations and creatures were decided upon, I threw away all those notes. It wasn’t that they wouldn’t work, but rather a new idea jumped to mind. I ran with the new one, bringing in a teenage girl with a troubled family history and a desire to live her own life more than simply to fit in. I wanted to take her away from the usual patterns I had seen, and so I made her a boxer, used to the dingy, dimly-lit gyms you’d see in old movies. The kind of person who would willingly get up at “oh-dark-thirty” so she could get in her necessary exercise and training before school. Someone willing to sacrifice social standing for her own reasons. Someone who believes in herself, even if others dismiss her. Sam came alive for me, and I am glad I got to share a part of her here.

Where I once had to depend on late night television to feed my love of movies, I now have shelves devoted to DVDs. My “guilty pleasure”, as it were. Since those early days, I’ve seen tokusatsu in many forms, and even at its worst, it tells the stories of people. People from disparate backgrounds coming together, even if they don’t really care for each other on a normal basis, and helping to stop a threat to their homes. It’s that connection to others that brings out the best in humanity. Having my character become a part of that makes me proud to be a part of the Dino Force team.

As I type this, I have yet to see the “final form” of Dino Force. I know the basis. I’ve read the background and the main ideas behind the project, but the only contact I have had so far has been entirely my own. I can’t wait to see what the others have done, and how Sam’s tale fits in with theirs, now that the enemies have returned.

T. Mike McCurley lives in a small city in Oklahoma, where indeed, “the wind comes sweeping” and all that. He began writing superhero prose on a whim one day, and found it enjoyable enough to continue. His short stories soon formed the backbone of what became known as the world of The Emergence, describing events and players in a world of metahumanity that began in 1963 and has continued to grow since. From there came the stories of the metahuman cop known as Firedrake, which has now filled three books, with a fourth in the works. The Adventures of Jericho Sims was born from ideas years ago and they are finally seeing the light of day. Described by the author as “Josey Wales meets Carl Kolchak”, Jericho is a gunfighter cursed by dark forces. Searching for a demonic doctor, Jericho’s travels bring him face to face with the supernatural. Amazon has a full list of available books, and if you want free stuff (‘cause who doesn’t like free, right?) check out the website at www.tmikemccurley.com where the blog runneth over with free stories!Nicholas Ahlhelmhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05651416360488414615noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-321268738865715421.post-14905215772223341702017-05-20T07:21:00.003-05:002017-05-20T07:21:51.350-05:00Only days remain for Dino Force!Only 3 days remain to make Dino Force a reality on Kickstarter. Help us make this book happen!
I blame my kids. This story is their fault.

Both of them were huge Power Ranger fans and as any good parent would, I ended up watching a lot of episodes with them.

Yes, it’s goofy, the acting is uneven and trying to make sense of the continuity will make your brain melt. At the same time, it’s got a fun silver age comic book vibe, most of the characters are likable is constantly throwing out ideas that made the writer part of my brain go ‘what’s up with that…? Why aren’t they doing more with that?”

This led to us having all kinds of ‘what if…?” chats, and using their action figures to create our own episodes.

It was fun and as close as I was ever going to get to write Power Rangers.

Then Nick came along and suddenly, all those ideas we’d come up with while playing had a place to go.

Mixed in with that sense of excitement, I was given Africa as my country to protect. The added challenge of being a middle-aged white guy writing about Africa really got my brain firing.

Then I decided I wasn’t juggling enough ideas/challenges and decided to make my hero a teenage girl.

It was a fun, stress inducing experience helping to create this little world and because of the subject matter I might actually get my kids to read one of my stories.

Or receive that most hoped for by every parent bit of praise: “Yeah, it was okay.”

Almost any genre was possible in the classic pulps, and just about everyone of them had a "spicy" version. The spicy pulps were the back counter magazines of their day, although by today's standards they were far more tame than your average PG-13 film.

But that grand tradition of the pulps never quite combined with the emerging tales of mechanical men also prevalent in the 30s and beyond. Until now.

Series creator Jim Beard teams with co-editor Nicholas Ahlhelm to bring the adventures of Sam, the world's first fully automated man. (And we do mean fully automated.) Saucy Robot Stories introduces him and his friends Augie and Doona as they have weird adventures across New York and beyond.

In six new stories by Sam Gafford, M.H. Norris, Travis Hiltz, Justin Bell, Aaron Smith and Chuck Miller, the pulp genre is stretched with new and unique ways our heroes face down new threats and new weirdness. All with just a bit of sauciness to go along with it!

Saucy Robot Stories will be available in April from Metahuman Press.

All three of these characters will play a
part in future Airboy stories.

Why Airboy?

He certainly isn’t a character that went without a revival in the 1980s. Chuck Dixon and Tim Truman created a rather amazing series at Eclipse (now being collected by IDW) with art by the likes of Stan Woch, Ben Dunn, Ron Randall and Tom Lyle.

Flying Dutchman will be the first other Air Fighter to
make an appearance in the new book.

But that series didn’t tell the story of the original Airboy. Instead it focused on Davy Nelson Jr., the son of the original character and his interaction with a mix of the original Air Fighters and new “ripped from the headlines” adventures. Despite being written by well known Republican writer Chuck Dixon, it was even famous for being the anti-Reagan comic. But while it offered great stories, it wasn’t the take on Airboy I wanted to see.

I wanted to go back to the original, I wanted to make him a fish out of water and I wanted to update the Air Fighters in a very different way.

In my initial short story, Misery and the Airtomb play their part in the first story, but they are really a subplot as Airboy finds himself young and alive again in the early 1980s. He’s immediately thrust into a plot to stop the massive super-weapon that nearly killed him once before.

The tale will hopefully kickoff a new series of adventures starring the high-flying adventurer beginning in 2017.

Millie isn't left by the wayside in this book though. As she sets out to find Kevin, she stumbles upon a new danger: the plots of the awakened Carolyn Bates! Bates is a far larger threat than ever before, but even with the help of two mysterious figures that also use the name Lightweight, she might not survive to see Kevin again!
Since that time, fans have asked when another edition of monsters turned heroes would make it on to shelves. That time is now, as Horror Heroes 2 has arrived in print and digital.

The new anthology features two short stories and a novella by three writers all returning from the previous volume.

Travis Hiltz kicks the anthology off with his own take on Frankenstein’s Monster as he turns the creature into a modern adventurer with his own team of off-the-wall allies in “Frankenstein & The Rejects”.

Editor Nicholas Ahlhelm adds a little romance to the scares as he takes readers to “The Beach House”, the location Lynda travels to in order to finally spread her wings after years of being the good girl. There she meets a strange young man, one that might actually be a legendary sea monster!

Darrin Albert closes things out with “Steamed!”, a new novella featuring his bigfoot hero Littlefoot. Darrin designs an entire world between human and sasquatch, one which Littlefoot must bridge in order to find her future and possibly save all of human and sasquatch-kind!

These three big stories are now available in print and Kindle editions.
